Arts & Humanities Extra Credit
Each grading period an extra credit assignment will be available. The assignment will be challenging work that will enhance the students learning during the grading period. Each student is encouraged to take advantage of this extra credit opportunity.
Quarter 1 Extra Credit Opportunity:
Native American Culture: Our students are learning about Native American culture. We have learned that a culture is a way of life. We are studying their music, drama (storytelling), functional artwork, and dance. Our third graders are currently choosing their totem (an animal that represents them). For example, owls are known to be messengers and carry a message to people. So my totem is an owl because I deliver messages to students while teaching. To complete your extra credit you will create a totem pole for your family. You will choose an animal for each member of your family, then explain why you chose that animal for your family member. I have attached a link as well that gives some good examples of animal totems and gives a meaning for each animal as well.
Confused? Here are some step-by-step instructions:
1. Print the extra credit handout or get one from Mrs. Schuette's room (they are right by the door).

2. Chose an animal for each member of your family by looking at the list of animals and what they symbolize to Native Americans.
Here are the totems and the meaning of each animal.
3. Draw the face of each animal in the box provided on your handout.
4. Write a sentence for each animal telling me why you chose that animal to be that family member.
5. Turn into Mrs. Schuette!

Quarter 2 Extra Credit Opportunity:
Colonial American Culture: Our students are learning about Colonial American culture. We have learned that a culture is a way of life. We are studying their music, drama, artwork, and dance. We have discussed the journey the Colonists made to come to America, but what some people might not know is the Colonists actually went to Holland before they came to America. That was how they knew about Rembrandt's work! The Colonists wanted to leave Holland so they could have freedoms that they were denied in England. They left England and went to Holland so they could be free. When they got to Holland their children started losing their culture and forgetting much of their heritage. The Colonists packed their things up and went back to Holland to get supplies so they would be prepared on their journey to America.
Confused? Here are some step-by-step instructions:
1. Print the extra credit handout or get one from Mrs. Schuette's room (they are right by the door).

2. You do not have to cut out the steps of the Colonists trip, but you do need to number the steps in correct order.
3. Draw lines on the map to show where the colonists traveled
4. Turn into Mrs. Schuette! Please make sure your name is on your assignment.

Quarter 3 Extra Credit Opportunity:
While we were learning about Colonial America, fourth and fifth grade worked on self-portraits (making them as realistic as they could, like the famous artist Rembrandt). Self-portraits were very important to this culture because they did not have cameras to take photos, instead they would commission an artist to paint their portrait, often how they wanted to look (not how they actually looked). The extra credit for this grading quarter is to create a self-portrait, but in an abstract way. You will be using the Lego person template as your guide. What would you look like if Lego made a toy person that looked like you? Think about what is important to you- do you like baseball, football, or cheerleading? You could draw yourself in your uniform. Design a Lego, self-portrait, including important details about yourself.
